The Santa Clara Valley Water District board of directors unanimously approved Tuesday purchasing a pond aerator (called a “
SolarBee“) to reduce the production of methyl mercury in
Almaden Lake Park.
Water officials are trying to comply with recently adopted total-maximum-daily-loads for mercury in creeks and lakes impacted by mining waste, which require reduction of methyl mercury concentrations in water to reduce the concentration of the mineral in fish tissues.
According to water district officials, methyl mercury in the Guadalupe River Watershed is primarily produced in the district’s reservoirs and in shallow Lake Almaden. The solar-powered aerator is said to be the most economical and efficient way to introduce oxygen into Lake Almaden. Read more…

For the first time in 11 years, county engineers have completed a major retiming of traffic signals on eight South Bay expressways: Almaden, Capitol, Central, Foothill, Lawrence, Montague, Oregon-Page Mill, and San Tomas. To check if it worked, Mr. Roadshow enlisted the help of several commuters. Instead of seeing red, they found a sea of beautiful green.
The expressways have served as the backbone of Silicon Valley transportation for the past 40 years, with four of every five motorists using them several days a week. Six months after the Metcalf Energy Center came on line in Coyote Valley, the city of San Jose has yet to provide land to install an air monitoring station to protect residents of South County.
“San Jose agreed to put in ? stations to monitor the air before and after it passed over the plant and that work has not yet been done,” said Tony Eulo, who heads up environmental programs for Morgan Hill. “The agreement didn’t specify a time but certainly one would think it should be done before the plant was open.”
